Every now and then, it’s important to turn our attention to our own backyard. What started as a gradual improvement project at our home in Kerikeri — which also serves as the base for Kererū Development — has been evolving over many years and is now finally complete.

This space has grown and changed alongside our business, giving us the opportunity to refine ideas, test solutions, and continuously improve the layout and functionality of the property. It’s been a long-term landscaping journey, rather than a single project — and that’s exactly how many great landscapes are created.

Before, the property had become a little neglected and overgrown. While still usable, areas lacked structure and definition, and many of the trees had outgrown their space. Like many properties in Kerikeri, it had developed over time without a clear overall plan, which meant the flow and usability didn’t fully support how the space was being used.

After, the completed landscaping brings everything together. Through careful planning, reshaping levels, and adding structured elements, the property now feels connected, practical, and visually consistent. Each area has a purpose, and the overall layout works seamlessly for both home life and running a business from the property.

Working on our own property over time has given us valuable insight into how outdoor spaces evolve and how important it is to think long-term. It’s allowed us to develop landscaping solutions that are not only visually effective but also durable, functional, and adaptable to local conditions here in the Bay of Islands and the wider region.

At Kererū Development, we bring that same approach to every project — understanding that great landscapes don’t always happen overnight, but through thoughtful design and quality work over time.

If you’re considering upgrading your garden or landscaping, this project is a great example of what can be achieved with a clear vision and the right approach — even if it’s built step by step.
